Sen. Thune Stumps for St. Louis Republican Ed Martin

Don’t expect John Thune to worry that the GOP candidate he is stumping for today is running in Dick Gephardt’s old district.

The Republican from South Dakota knows a thing or two about districts held previously by a minority leader — in the 2004 election, Thune shocked Tom Dashle, than the top Democratic in the Senate.

This morning, Thune was set to appear at McArthur’s Bakery in Lemay with St. Louis Republican Ed Martin, who is challenging incumbent Democratic Congressman Russ Carnahan.

Martin is gaining some momentum in Gephartland — his fundraising totals are respectable and the district was recently moved from “solidly” Democratic to “likely” Democratic by the non-partisan Cook Political Report.

If he continues to gain ground, look for other prominent Republicans to follow Thune’s visit here. The South Dakotan’s appearance is highlighting his opposition to cap and trade — a position which the host bakery shares.
